Cafés, ordering & paying.
Today's lesson is the eat-and-drink-in-Italy block — ordering coffee at the bar, reading a five-course menu, paying the bill, and stating dietary needs (vegetarian, vegan, allergies) so you can eat safely at any Italian table.
Pick a lesson to start
01At the bar — ordering coffee
Caffè, cappuccino, caffellatte (don't say latte). Stand at the banco, drink quickly, leave.
02Reading an Italian menu
Antipasto → primo → secondo → contorno → dolce. The five-course flow, decoded.
03Paying & tipping
Il conto, per favore. Splitting bills, the coperto truth, why 20% feels weird.
04Vegetarian, vegan & allergies
Sono vegetariano/a + the brodo-di-carne follow-up that catches hidden meat.
Coffee bar culture is not café culture
Italian bar is a standing coffee counter — not a place to sit for hours. Order at the cashier (la cassa) first, pay, get a receipt (scontrino), then hand it to the barista. Standing at the bar is cheaper than sitting at a table. Cappuccino after a meal will get you a gentle look of bewilderment from Italians.
