Codice fiscale, permesso & questura.
Today's lesson is the bureaucratic core — codice fiscale (free, same-day, Italy's PAN-card equivalent), permesso di soggiorno (residence permit, 8-12 weeks via Poste's kit-giallo), the questura interview, and the Indian Embassy phrases for passport renewal or OCI. The two documents that unlock every other Italian service.
Pick a lesson to start
01Codice fiscale
The Italian PAN card. Free, same-day at the agenzia delle entrate. Get it within 7 days of arrival — it unlocks everything else.
02Permesso di soggiorno
The residence permit. Pick up the kit giallo at Poste, submit within 8 days, wait 8-12 weeks. The receipt itself is a valid ID meanwhile.
03At the questura
Fingerprint interview. Calm, polite, formal Lei. 'Può parlare lentamente?' is your safety phrase. Bring originals AND photocopies.
04Indian Embassy
Indian-government side: passport renewal, OCI, certificates. Embassy in Rome serves south; Consulate in Milan serves north.
Codice fiscale = Italian PAN card — free and same-day
Get it at any Agenzia delle Entrate office — no appointment needed, instant issue. Free of charge. You need it for: opening a bank account, signing a rental contract, getting a SIM card, registering with a GP, and INPS insurance. Do this in the first week of arrival. Your university may issue a temporary one faster — ask the segreteria.
